Victor Wembanyama All eyes will be focused on him this summer after it was widely reported that the French basketball sensation will be chosen first overall at the NBA Draft in 2023. NBA fans had plenty to say after the NBA Draft Lottery ended on Tuesday. The San Antonio Spurs won the first pick.
Victor Wembanyama is a 19-year-old French professional basketball player who plays for Metropolitans 92 in the LNB Pro A. He is listed as 7-foot-4, but online reports have him between 7-foot-5 to 7-foot-2. Wembanyama is considered the best basketball prospect of recent years. Wembanyama is a big man with the skills of a small guard.
The good fortune experienced by the Spurs couldn’t have been more timely considering that the team, coached by Gregg Popovich, isn’t the elite team it once was during the David Robinson and Tim Duncan era. Under Popovich’s tutelage, the Spurs won five NBA championships, the last coming in 2014. The Spurs selected Duncan as their first pick in the NBA draft the last time they had that position.
Spurs’ fortunes are expected to drastically change as soon as Wembanyama is selected. It will be interesting to see how Wembanyama plays alongside the young core of Keldon Johnson, Tre Jones, and Devonte’ Graham.
